A popular legend as to the origins of the Christmas stocking, is that many years ago a poor man had no money for his daughters’ dowries and was worried how they would manage after his death. Saint Nicholas heard about the girls, and as he knew the man would not accept help, he hatched a secret plan- delivering bags of gold to each of the girls by leaving them in their stockings which were hanging to dry by the fireplace.
